The Land

The ‘big land’ of the Maremma

In a land that has long remained off the beaten tourist itineraries, there is much to discover. There is the sea at Punta Ala, with its prestigious Sailing Club, and Principina Beach, or the secluded beach of Cala Violina and Castiglione della Pescaia, which can be reached by bike. There is Argentario, with its beautiful promontory that preserves the memory of an ancient Saracen domination.

There is a park, among the oldest in Italy, which covets pearls of beauty, not only of a naturalistic sort, but also in terms of customs and folklore, like those tied to the butteri, the cowboys of the Maremma. At the Parco dell’Uccellina Natural Reserve, there are wild horses and a nature that has a truly exciting vein to it. The inland is dotted with towns and villages; untouched and marvelous. Here, restaurants and innkeepers await you to serve foods and wines that rarely can be sampled elsewhere. It is simple and inventive cooking, natural and wise, that today is still close to its roots. It is the land of stupendous hot springs, warm and healing, in use since Roman times and still today a popular destination for excursions and visits by people from around the world. It is the land that saw the first steps of the Etruscan civilization, which in large part generated the growth of Rome. Here, some of the best preserved necropolis can be found.

Fortune kept this land far from the destinations of tourism for a long time, delivering it to us now, intact and marvelous, to discover with the gentleness and curiosity that one would with any natural phenomenon.
