Cycling in Maremma: valuable advice

 

I am Isacco Scorza, Sales Manager of Fattoria San Lorenzo. After years spent out, I was lucky enough to return to work in my native land and I must say that I consider myself lucky. I love the sea of our coast, the peace and tranquillity of this corner of Tuscan paradise, the incredible variety of smells and flavours as well as the incomparable food and wine offer … and there is more!

One of my passions is cycling on even unusual routes and I assure you that here cycling in Maremma constitutes a benefit and it is a privilege to travel along paths and roads, with little traffic with the mild and sweet climate that assists us for almost the whole year. In Fattoria San Lorenzo we can also offer you this and give you the way not to give up, even on holiday, to such an exciting sporting activity! In fact, with us, you can have a bike room where you can safely store your bike if you want to bring it; alternatively, we offer, at your complete disposal, an excellent rental of city bikes or modern e-bikes, race bikes and mountain bikes, all also in electric mode. You will not have to think about anything; just let us know your intention to rent one of our bicycles, chosen from our bike park, in advance.

 

 

As you can already imagine, it is priceless to be able to explore our land by bike, savor the air and colors, and immerse yourself in unspoiled nature, harsh and sweet at the same time. Maybe, on your return, you could relax in one of our three beautiful swimming pools while waiting for a sunset that, here in Maremma, tinges the sky red.

Today I want to introduce you to two wonderful cycling routes perfect for guests, which will be able to start right from inside our large estate and then reach the recommended sites in complete safety and convenience, without ever having to ride on a public road.

1. The Maremma Park: a real must for those who love two wheels! Directly from Fattoria San Lorenzo and in just 15 km / 9.32 miles (one-way) it will be possible to reach the enchanting beach of Marina di Alberese, one of the unmissable itineraries of the Park, a real jewel of nature where you can immerse yourself in clear and crystalline water, and meanwhile, enjoying with your eyes a beach made suggestive by the smooth white trunks brought by the sea, gifts of winter storms. A real painting, a work of art of nature! Moreover, in the autumn period, especially at sunset, you will be able to see various types of wintering birds that have chosen this protected area as a safe place for habitual frequentation. The path to reach Marina di Alberese, then, is nothing short of unique, immersed as it is in nature, between Mediterranean scrub and clearings, where wild horses and the famous Maremma cows with long horns graze free under the surveillance of the butteri, legendary figures that are somewhat reminiscent of the Texan cowboys or the gypsies of the Camargue. An unexpected encounter, along the way, may be that with one of the foxes of the Park, who, curious and looking for food because unfortunately accustomed by tourists, look out along the way to remedy something good! In this regard, all those who visit the Park are recommended to avoid providing any type of food to the animals that inhabit the area. This path is incredible and trust me, it has to be done!
2. Difficulty: low.
   Flat route.
   Suitable for both adults and children with any bike.
   Suggest regular city bikes and city e-bikes.
   Duration: about 50 minutes (one-way from Fattoria San Lorenzo)

   

3. Marina di Grosseto and Principina a Mare: for those who prefer an excursion to discover the coast there is a more linear but equally beautiful paved path that in 18 km / 11.18 miles (one way) leads first to Marina di Grosseto, a town with wide beaches, bathing facilities well organized and a small port of recent construction.. You then reach Principina a Mare, bordering, by sea, with the Park Reserve. In fact, if you continue on foot along the beach, leaving behind the few bathing facilities, we can immerse ourselves in a precious spectacle, from where the white trunks of Alberese and the protected marshy areas that take the name of “clear of Principina“. A centuries-old pine forest, the Pineta del Tombolo, which also affects the towns of Marina di Grosseto and Castiglione della Pescaia, crowns the somewhat wild beach of this locality typical of family tourism

   Duration: about 90 minutes (one-way from Fattoria San Lorenzo)
