San Galgano Abbey
Find out more
San Galgano Abbey is one of the Tuscan most interesting historic, picturesque and full-of-legend site. Built near Siena, in Chiusdino, by the Cistercian monks, who completed it at the end of the 13th century.
The building that visually strikes the visitors because of the lack of all the roof, can be easily compared to Melrose and Kelso in Scotland or Tintern in England.
The church lies on a totally empty plain, no other structure surrounds it, letting the abbey come out with magnificence, with its wonderful abside and great portals which open into an indoor unpaved floor.
A weekend in our holiday homes in Grosseto is perfect to know one of our region’s most picturesque contexts, a cloister, a sacristy with frescos, a chapter house, a parlor and a scriptorium complete the entire scene, in the magic of day and night, natural and artificial lights which create an ideal atmosphere for exhibitions and concerts.
Just a hundred meters from San Galgano, up on the hill, the Montesiepi Chapel with its rotunda with its legendary sword in the stone, dated back to the Medieval age but still keeping thousands of misteries and secrets.
